Weekly Reflections

January 18, 2019

Finding an Interest...

On our campus, we attempt to offer as many opportunities as we can for our students to work with mentors and coaches in their anticipated fields of study in college and possible career paths. We create the ability to do this through our Mentorship class, Incubator and Accelerator programs, Robotics, and our Health Science Technology classes, to list a few.

We had the opportunity to host TraumaRama on Tuesday at Westlake High School. It was a day for students to learn and experience Stop the Bleed training, a Distracted Driving simulation, Q&A with a medical professional panel and more... Approximately 80 trauma surgeons spent the day with our students discussing topics that are important to teenagers and safety...

We are looking to fill some key board positions for the 2019-2020 school year, and we need your help to spread the word!

If you (or someone you know) is interested in

  • a rewarding experience
  • getting more connected at WHS
  • making a difference for our kids
  • sharing your time and talents...

and have some flexibility in your schedule to volunteer, please email me at westlakeptopresident@gmail.com to learn more about various opportunities.

I hope you will consider joining the WHS PTO Executive Committee.

Speech & Debate Results

The Winston Churchill High School TFA Tournament provided more amazing results for the Westlake Speech and Debate Team!

Seniors Miles Sigel and Michael Dodgin closed out the tournament with teammates Senior Ali Slimi and Junior Miles Dintzner in Public Forum Debate, which means they were the final two teams competing in the tournament! Closeouts are rare in the speech and debate world, so if you have a chance, please congratulate these students on an incredible achievement.

Junior Maddie Szoo semifinaled in Original Oratory, Program Oral Interpretation, and Informative Speaking. At such a competitive tournament, advancing to one semifinal is an accomplishment, let alone three! Senior Amanda Chen and Junior Andrew Lee advanced to the Double Octafinal round of Lincoln Douglas Debate. Senior Nicolas Ho and Sophomore Jason Luo advanced to the Octafinal round of PF. Jason Luo finished 2nd place speaker overall in PF.

The team is looking forward to competing at McNeil this weekend and at Harvard in February. Thank you so much for your support of the Westlake Speech and Debate Team!

Model UN Awards @MUNSA

We are pleased to share with you that our Model UN delegates did an outstanding job at MUNSA last week, the largest high school-run conference in the US, with over 1,200 students in attendance.
