Weekly Reflections

November 9, 2018

The Westlake Chaps Varsity Team hosts the Bowie Bulldogs tonight (Senior Night!)

at WHS Chaparral Stadium @ 7:30pm.

We will be celebrating the careers of 47 senior players and 2 student trainers.

The Abrupt End...

Over the years, I have written about the excitement and joy derived from watching our students compete, perform, and create life-long memories. Whether it's on a field, stage, diamond, track, trail, gym, robotics field, it is a pleasure to watch our students compete with the help and guidance of our coaches, directors, and sponsors.

With nearly 90% of our students involved in extracurricular activities, there are numerous opportunities nightly it seems. There also is the downside of some of these seasons - they end for our seniors..............

Writing letters of gratitude has been shown to increase happiness and life satisfaction and those that focused on daily gratitude were actually able to train their brain to become more optimistic and positive.

Next week Challenge Success will have a theme of "Hats off to Gratitude". There will be cards with pens to write notes of gratitude to parents, other family members, students, and staff.

The gratitude stations will be available all day Monday through Friday in the Commons and in the library.

We enjoyed seeing many of you at our PTO General Meeting today.  Principal Ramsey kicked things off at 11:30am with a Q&A that always offers great info and insight into the halls of WHS.   Be sure to mark your calendar for our next one on January 18th, which will be one you don't want to miss!  Stay tuned for more details (hint: it will include a lot of interesting - and some surprising - details about College Admissions....where do WHS students REALLY apply, get accepted, and actually attend???).

Today's meeting also included Special Guests, Lisa Johnson & Chris Hanson, our Educational Technologists, who provided an overview of their roles at WHS, the supports they provide for students, staff, and parents as well as highlight some of the data we received from our Managing Digital Life student survey and both of our iPad Base Camps.  Be sure to see the Technology Section below about their parent webinars.

We discussed the Fall PTO funding of items for numerous classrooms and departments across our campus.  Check out this list!  Thank you again for your ongoing support of the WHS PTO and for making these allocations possible.  We will continue to update our Donor List as parents make donations to our No Hassle Fundraiser campaign.  Please email Kristin Paull, kpaull@planetpaull.com, in case of error or omission.

Just as the seasons change, so do the major events in our life.  Check out this week's blog to learn more about how to offer support in the face of grief.

The November 8th 2018-2019 Speaker Series presentation was canceled. We apologize for the inconvenience and will work to reschedule it soon. In the meantime, please feel free to look over old presentations or listen to them as podcasts!

The next speaker series is December 6th, "Catching the Signs: Suicide and Self-Harm Awareness".

Yesterday, we had our 10th Tech Talk parent webinar. Parent webinars range in topic from Managing Digital Distractions and Social Media and Calendars and Time Management to Test Prep and Vetting Fake News. All of our webinars are archived on our website here.

Westlake Boys' Golf Team

The Westlake Boys' Golf Team won the Lake Travis Shootout last Friday and Saturday. Playing against some of the competition in the state of Texas, the Chaps rallied from a few shots back after Friday's 36 hole marathon to win on Saturday as they shot a blistering 6 under par round of 282 Saturday. The team comprised of J. Holland Humphries, Jacob Sosa, Sean-Karl Dobson, Jackson Davenport, and Blake Benson kept the Chaps undefeated on the season. It was a great win in very high winds. Great win and Go Chaps!
