The end of the first...

Today marks the end of the first quarter of the 18-19 school year. It has been a busy week and quarter for our students and staff. We believe we have had a strong first quarter due to some outstanding senior leadership on campus. We have had some significant gains in our staff with a skilled group of new teachers who are small in number but have had a positive impact at WHS. I was talking to a group of senior boys yesterday who were amazed how quick the year is going, and they mentioned how Thanksgiving break is perfect this year-it's exactly halfway in the second quarter and that is pretty cool.

It's a busy time of the year!

PTO board members and volunteers have been working together the past few months to raise funds via mum sales, pavers, our No Hassle Fundraiser, and managing concessions for all WHS games. We are now allocating the money we've raised to fulfill classroom & staff requests and upcoming campus projects.  More news on that to come soon!

We will be up bright and early serving breakfast to our staff at Westlake on Tuesday, October 23rd. Please consider joining our committee and contact our Staff Appreciation Chair, Christine Machon at machon06@gmail.com if you are interested or would like more information about the program.  It's a great way to serve and get to know WHS staff!

We are grateful for the support from the WHS community and look forward to seeing many of you at the PTO General Meeting on Friday, Nov 9th.

Thank your for your ongoing support of our No Hassle Fundraiser.  We will continue to update our Donor List and please email Kristin Paull, kpaull@planetpaull.com, in case of error or omission - we want to be sure we correctly capture all of our generous donors!

Stay Dry!

Warmly,

GOLF

Both Chaps I and II Varsity teams started the 2018-19 season in style at historic Brackenridge Park Golf Course on the San Antonio River this past weekend with Chaps I winning this year's NEISD Swing 4 the Cure by 18 strokes and Chaps II finishing in 9th place out of 17 quality varsity teams from across the state!

Friday's 36 hole marathon saw the Chaps I team of Sadie Englemann, Madelyn Jones, Bentley Cotton, Jackie Feldman, and Lauren May jump out to a 12 stroke lead over district rival Lake Travis by posting a team total of six-under par 282. Sadie's tourney leading 64 (-8)--tying Sierra Sims' Chap 2013 record for low score relative to par-- set the pace while Madelyn's 69 and solid team scoring contributed to the leading margin. Chaps II--Annika Saidleman, Ally Black, Emily Mu, Brooke McDonough, Meghan Meserole--finished Day 1 in 6th place with Black (72-72) and Saidleman (76-78) leading the way.

Chaps I started the final 18 with an eleven stroke lead over LT. The teams battled it out all day until the Chaps rolled in eight birdies on holes 13-16 to secure the win with rounds of 282-289-292. (-1/863). Congratulations to S. Englemann (64-66-70/-16) for leading all scoring with a display of exceptional golf and to M. Jones for placing 3rd (69-70-75/-2) and also earning Top 5 All-Star Team Honors! J. Feldman (75-78-70/223) and Chaps II A. Black (72-72-79/223) finished in the Top 20 with a T-12.

***The Chaps girls golf team would like to thank you all for your support of our Hey Cupcake fundraising efforts. Thanks to our WHS staff and students and Hey Cupcake's sweet support, we were able to contribute $500 to the Swing 4 the Cure team tournament fund that is donated to the Susan G. Komen organization or sometimes given to a special someone in need of financial assistance during cancer treatment and recovery.

Given all the big wins by football, volleyball, tennis, and golf, it was a great weekend to be a Chap! Go Chaps!

TENNIS

On Friday, after 2 major rain delays early in the week, Westlake took the court with Lake Travis at 10:00am in the morning...at approximately 4:15pm the final shot was hit by our #6 boys singles player, Shashwath Keta, to win 14-12 in the 3rd set tie-breaker. It was epic! We won 10-9 over Lake Travis for the 25-6A district championship.

Next up...the bi-district round against Canyon HS out of New Braunfels!

Go Chaps!
