Eanes Education Foundation (EEF)

16 Westlake High School teachers funded this year.

Every dollar counts. Every donor matters.

Simple times...

We hope you have a wonderful three-day weekend. This weekend always hits at a perfect time. Everyone is into the flow of the new year. The routine is established, and our habits for the year have been established. We are half way to Thanksgiving Break and nearing the end of the 1st Quarter.

We hope everyone can slow down this weekend and get some true quality time with their loved ones. One cannot predict when the best memories will be made with family and friends, but one must be present with family and friends for any memory to occur. Make some time even during a busy ACL, Texas-OU weekend, and activity-filled three days with your closest ones.

As my mom used to say often, "we don't remember days, we remember special moments."

TEACHER FEATURE - Nadine Herbst

This week's teacher feature spotlights our Math Department Chair, Nadine Herbst. Nadine has taught math at Westlake for 11 years. Nadine has been teaching for 28 years and gained a love of math through her struggles as a student in high school. She had an influential Calculus teacher in college that convinced her she could explain things better than anyone else! Mrs. Herbst also has 2 boys at WHS. Matthew, a junior, plays Mellophone and French Horn in the band. Andrew, a freshman, is a swimmer.

At the time of our visit, students were studying harmonic motion. Students were using mathematical equations to identify and describe a variety of transverse waves. Mrs. Herbst perused the room while students worked collaboratively to identify the function that described each wave and graphically represent the wave. Even though students took a primarily mathematical approach to describing each wave, Mrs. Herbst made sure to weave in connections to waves students could encounter in everyday life such as, sound waves, radio waves, and ocean waves.

We are fortunate to have Mrs. Herbst leading our math team. She is focused on creating engaging and rigorous experiences for our students, and building a real sense of comradery among our math teachers.

Girls Golf: Hays Invitational at Plum Creek

After teeing off in a dense fog that covered Plum Creek Valley, the Chaps girls golf team wasted no time in claiming their second victory of the young season. Led by senior Lauren Luu's career best one-over par 72, the Chaps I team of Luu, Meghan Meserole, Kathryn Jones, Jelanie Brookins, and Emma Davidson brought home the team gold with a magnificent 303 total.

With balanced scoring, the Chaps II team of Laine Trotter, Sofia Calavitta, Katie Taughinbaugh, Devin Dickey, and Estee Reiss also joined in the fun, shooting a team score of 345 to finish T-4 with the perennial 3A state contenders from Salado High School. Trotter (82) and Calavitta (83) set the pace for Chaps II.  The teams from Lake Travis and Westwood finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Congratulations to our Chaps who made the Top 5 All-Star Team!  Lauren Luu (2nd), Meghan Meserole (T-3rd/74) and Jelanie Brookins(5th/75) played some stellar golf to gain this outstanding recognition.

Way to play, Chaps!

Barbara Puett JV Classic: Chaps Win!
Congratulations to our fighting girls golf team for their victory at the recent 9th annual BP JV Classic!  McNeil High finished 2nd while Anderson High took home the team bronze.

The Chaps led the way in individual scoring as well.  Kerrisa Limon  posted even par to take 1st medalist and was joined by Sofia Calavitta and Katie Taughinbaugh in the Top 3.  Estee Reiss and Devin Dickey also made the BP all-star team of the top 12 scorers.  It was another tremendous  display of competitive fire and sportsmanship by the Chaps!
