Volunteering in the WHS Community

Notice:  Students do not receive community service credit for hours spent in activities which benefit an organization of which the student is a member.

Volunteering is a great way to…

  • Meet new friends.
  • Learn about fields of interest.
  • Earn awards.
  • Solve “real life” problems.
  • Make a difference.
  • Gain job experience.
  • Impress colleges.
  • Be a contributing member of society.
  • Earn the VOLUNTEER CORD upon graduation from WHS.

Volunteer Opportunities

Click Volunteer Opportunities for a list of over 50 places to volunteer in the Austin area.

Your can keep track of your hours on this Community Service Verification Form (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader) or you can check your hours on-line with the Volunteer Hours Search form.

See Mrs. Brown in the WHS Assistant Principals Office for questions or call your Assistant Principal.

You can input your hours online now with the Service Hours Online Submission Form

How To Earn Chaps In Service Hours

  • Select an agency or project that interests you. You do not have to choose an agency listed in this brochure.  However, the agency or project you choose must be a nonprofit organization. If you have any questions or  concerns about an agency or project, check with the WHS Community Service Faculty Advisor before you go to work service hours.
  • For a more complete listing of opportunities, see the Volunteer Now notebook in the WHS Library.
  • Take a Community Service Verification Form with you when you go to work your hours. These forms can be found in the Counselors or AP offices, or with the WHS Community Service Faculty Advisor.
  • Record your service hours at the Service Hours On-line Submission Form.
  • Return your completed Verification Form to the box in the Assistant Principal's office in the main WHS building.  The faculty advisor will approve all Verification Forms. When the hours are approved, the hours will appear when using the Volunteer Hours Search Form.  It is a good idea to keep a copy of your forms for your records.
  • Chaps In Service hours are over and above hours required for awards or grades such as  NHS, Eagle Scout, or Teen Teaching.
